Michael Review: A Biopic Fueled by Passion, Nostalgia and Genius

With the weather warming up—a little too quickly—I’m trying my best to spend more time away from the embracing comfort of my home. Because, well let’s be honest, there ain’t no way I’ll be leaving my house once that notorious Korean summer stakes claim to the land…and my sanity.

That being said, last weekend’s outing was a trip to the cinema, so let’s get into it.

Michael: The Biopic That’s Still Shattering Records

I started my Saturday with none other than the highly anticipated biopic Michael. For many of us that’ve been counting down the days until its release, Michael was always going to be about the nostalgia, the music and the legend himself.

But wow,—this film struck me more deeply than I could have foreseen.

My Love For My Music And Film

Bear with me while I sidestep a little. One thing you ought to know about me is that my love for music is in my blood—it’s genetic. My papa was a gifted professional clarinet player who had albums made from his work, and my dad is a fervent lover of cinema.

Which means when I listen to songs or watch movies they sink far further into me than simple entertainment ever could.

So when I say this film was phenomenal, I mean it goes beyond great cinema. Watching this movie, I could feel for the first time in a very long while (with the exception of Avatar) that this was the result of pure passion from every person that was lucky enough to be a part of it.

I could not have imagined a more accurate and emotionally impactful way to depict the King of Pop. All of that in combination with music that defined an entire genre, shaped generations and transcends time, my nostalgia was through the roof.

I urge you to watch this film in the full cinema experience that it’s meant to be viewed in. And if you don’t find your foot tapping on its own or your head bobbing along to the all-too-juicy beats then…try again, because I refuse to believe that his music wasn’t for every single one of us.

P.S. Jaffar Jackson better get that Oscar.
