If my Korean Eel Barbecue post wasn’t quite able to convince you that eel is delicious and absolutely worth trying, then then allow me one more attempt by introducing you to jangeo dopbap.
Jangeo dopbap is a rice bowl dish topped with grilled eel. The eel is brushed with a sweet and savoury sauce, creating a delicious combination of flavours that can be enhanced even further with the accompanying toppings.
At Gomok there was actually a little card explaining the different ways to enjoy the eel with the accompanying toppings. But there really aren’t any rules about it—mix and match as you wish. The general idea is to take a spoonful of eel and rice, place it in the empty bowl, mix in one of the toppings, and have a taste. Then simply repeat with another topping combination.
If barbecue eel feels a little too adventurous, jangeo dopbap is a great place to start. The sweet and savoury glaze makes the eel approachable, while the rice and toppings create familiar flavours that are easy to enjoy. It’s no surprise that eel has long been regarded as a health and stamina food throughout East and Southeast Asia.
Whether you’re already a seafood lover or simply looking to try something new, jangeo dopbap is a delicious introduction to one of Korea’s most underrated dishes.
