I was tempted to call the post Butcher Boys uMhlanga Review but who am I kidding—we already know Butcher Boys is great! So really, this post is just a way for me to talk about the succulent steaks and amazing creamed spinach we ate during a family dinner there.
As usual, my senses got the better of me and I didn’t even attempt to take pictures of our starter dishes; beef carpaccio and cheesy garlic prawns. Prawns and cheese aren’t something that can go wrong so this was the easy safe order for us all to share. The beef on the other hand was a first time try for my in-laws. The thing about carpaccio is that it can seem a little strange at first—raw beef slices with some parmesan and rocket. But I promise, for those of you who’ve yet to try it, it’s an absolute symphony of flavours. The balsamic, olive oil and kiss of pesto make it a tantalising start to any meal.
As I’m sure you know, the whole reason we chose this restaurant was for the steaks and boy did we order a bunch of ‘em! Now I can’t remember exactly which steak was which cut but I know we had a few fillets, possibly a rump and a burger. The important thing to know is that everything was delicious.
I highly recommend adding the Bone Marrow Butter to whichever steaks you order. It adds an immense amount of flavour that the steak doesn’t need but is definitely welcomed. They melt the butter onto your steak right in front of you which makes for cool bit of wow-factor.
And the sides, oh man, those chips and the creamed spinach were top tier! Hands down the best creamed spinach I’ve ever had. As for the chips they completely nailed that crisp exterior and fluffy potato centre.
Lastly, a little something sweet to round out the meal. I’ve had some phenomenal crème brûlées before and this one was about a 7 outta 10. Nothing particularly special but hey, they are are a steak restaurant after all. So if you’re keen on an after steak treat this is a decent option.
I’m not all that well traveled but I’m entirely convinced that South African steaks are some of the best pieces of meat in the world. Obviously not in comparison to things like Wagyu or Hanwoo, but the regular fillets. They’re simply beautiful and even more beautifully priced compared to anything I’d have to pay for steak up here🥲.
