Grocery Shopping at Lotte Mart in Jinju: A Surprisingly Fun Expat Ritual

There have been a handful of moments over the past few years that made me all too aware of my adult brain development. One such moment was the overwhelming excitement I felt when making my first mattress purchase and another is the genuine joy of grocery shopping.

Grocery Shopping For One

Living alone means grocery shopping isn’t necessarily a monthly or even bimonthly thing—but when my friends and I do make the trip it’s always a great time. Maybe it’s just girls being girls but grabbing that trolley (shopping cart) and taking your time to peruse the variety of fresh veg, fruit, meat and wine is blissful stuff.

Online Shopping And Local Marts

We do tend to get most of our essentials from the local mart or even online, but when it comes to wine Lotte Mart is a must. The selection isn’t exceptional by any means but it’s a far bigger range than the countryside stores could offer.

The Best Part: Lotte Mart’s Wine Section

On this particular day we met the loveliest attendant. She talked us through which wines would be good based on our taste preferences and then proceeded to give my gals a light wine buzz from the free samples. Needless to say we walked out of the wine section with more bottles than anticipated.

After the free wine comes all the yummy food samples; dumplings, savoury pancakes and yoghurts. We pretty much had a free brunch while doing our grocery shopping😋.

Why Grocery Shopping Becomes a Social Event

If you’re blessed enough to own a car and have some of the cutest girl friends around plan yourselves a grocery shopping day. You’ll talk about food, drinks, traditions and plan for  future dinner dates or cocktail nights. Sooner or later you’ll have started your own little family of girlies just living that expat life and oh, how fun womanhood can be when we get to live it together.
