I may have mentioned this in one of my other posts but I live nowhere near Seoul so I pretty much avoid heading up there unless absolutely necessary, and this certainly was. Concerts being in the evening and the limited buses that go to my little farmland meant I had to spend a night in the capital, so my day started pretty early.
I splurged a little and got the premium bus ticket cause I’m fancy like that (the apps for booking bus tickets are Tmoney GO or Bustago in case anyone was wondering) and for a 4 and a half hour journey it’s totally worth it. I can’t read on buses without getting super sick (even with the motion cues on apple devices) so I spent most of the time listening to podcasts (What Now by Trevor Noah) and watching some movies on my iPad.
When I got to Seoul I made a quick stop at my hotel to drop off my bags. I arrived at the Nambu Bus Terminal and New Day Hotel Gangnam was a quick 10 minute bus ride from the station. It did cost more than I’d like to have paid for one night (₩145 000) but I loved the convenience of the location, reviews were decent and I only made the reservation a week in advance.
Next up was an early dinner at Taco Amigo in Itaewon. We shared some tacos and a quesadilla with a side of beans and rice. I wouldn’t exactly recommend this place but it’s not bad either, I really liked the beans and rice. But since Itaewon has other seriously good Mexican places this one just isn’t on the must-go list.
With our tummies full we started our journey to Goyang Stadium. A few subways and a lot of stairs later we were waiting in the longest line to head in; although, lines in Korea move pretty quick so we didn’t wait that long.
And we were in! Now you need to know I’m not a Coldplay super-fan or anything, I just know the big songs (and there are a lot) but I’ve also known for the longest time that when it came to concerts Coldplay were top tier. I’d seen videos and read reviews about the overall energy, experience and excitement that they create being unmatched and that’s why I was there.
Before the guys even came out the crowd was so ready. We could all feel it, I’m certain. As if we all knew that for the next 2 and a half hours nothing else was gonna matter. And that’s exactly how it felt when we finally saw them. For those few hours we were all simply vibing on the same frequencies. I forgot just how far back into my childhood their music went (thanks to my brother who was way too obsessed with them) and that nostalgia was a little unexpected but so welcome.
And all the extra touches! There was so much confetti (in shapes that correlated to the songs), giant balloons to pass around the crowd, incredible lighting, wrist bands that light up in coordinated sequences to certain songs and the glasses that turn the light beams into hearts. You felt like they really put their all into thinking of ways to include their fans and make sure that everyone was having an amazing time. I went on the night that Jin from BTS guess appeared which was also pretty cool.
The guys were very clear about conservation being something they believe strongly in. They spoke about how the floorboards used the movement of the crowds as a source of energy to charge some of their equipment. There were also stationary bikes that did the same thing. And, as always their main message was Love.
If you’ve attended any of their concerts I’d really wanna know what your experience was like and if you had the chance would you go again?
